Team Engagement Specialist

"What we know matters, but who we are matters more." - Brené Brown

We all can sense the energy within a team - whether it's tense, excited, lethargic, or disconnected. But understanding why it arises and how to influence those dynamics is far more complex.

As a Team Engagement Specialist, I focus on understanding the people in a team - what motivates them, holds them back, and drives their strengths and aspirations. I explore how they prefer to communicate, what triggers their stress, and how their behavior shifts under pressure. These sensitive, personal insights are often overlooked but crucial in shaping daily performance.

My work begins with creating a safe space where individuals feel comfortable to open up. Through personal assessments (ELI), we examine how behaviour impacts team dynamics both in regular situations and under stress. By identifying how each team member influences the system, we collaboratively work towards fostering stronger, more cohesive team dynamics.

Questions

What exactly do you mean by Team Engagement Specialist?

You likely already use employee engagement tools like surveys, Net Promoter Scores (eNPS), and data analysis apps. While these methods provide valuable, broad insights, they rely on quantitative, self-reported metrics that often miss the nuanced, real-time drivers of engagement.

They offer retrospective data, but do they truly capture personal experiences or create the psychological safety needed for honest sharing? Is there clear guidance on how to interprete results? Often leaders feel overwhelmed, leading to inaction or disengagement.

As a Team Engagement Specialist, I go deeper - focusing on people. I help leaders understand how their team members truly feel about their work, their colleagues, and what helps them thrive. Instead of surveys or apps, I use a qualitative Energy Assessment and in-depth conversations to uncover behavioral patterns, enabling teams to transform in ways that make a real difference.

How did you become an Team Engagement Specialist?

Often, it's our own experiences that drive us to help others. After over 20 years of working in various organizations and teams, leading my own teams, and reporting to different leaders, I’ve experienced my fair share of psychological unsafety. My passion for people-centered innovation, ethnographic research, and human behavior naturally led me to the role of team engagement specialist and coach.

Sharing requires vulnerability, and vulnerability can be scary. But by building rapport, listening holistically, and asking truly empowering questions, we can unlock transparency in a team’s dynamics - and that’s what I’m passionate about. Combining the Energy Leadership Index Assessment with in-depth interviews and team sessions, timed appropriately, has consistently proven to move mountains.

What does work as Team Engagement Specialist look like?

My work as a Team Engagement Specialist starts with active listening - beginning with you. What brings you to reach out? What challenges are you facing, and what have you tried? What are your perspectives and experiences?

Often, we begin with the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) assessment for the leader who initiates the conversation. This isn’t just to assess energy levels and build awareness around daily patterns and behaviors under stress, but also for you to experience the assessment process and the in-depth 2-hour session that follows. This allows you, as a leader, to decide if this approach is right for you and your team.

From there, you may either select one of the 3 Team Engagement Packs (see question: what are typical offerings?) or we move into a collaborative planning phase, where I design a tailored program that typically includes:

At any time, the program design can be flexibly adjusted to meet the evolving needs of the leader or the team members.
